Professor Ingrid Luiza Neto, coordinator ofPsychology Laboratory of the Traffic of the University Center of the Federal District – UDF, explains that in addition to being a lot of fun, Cycling has many individual benefits., environmental, economic and social.

“At the individual level, it makes people healthier, through physical exercise, reducing the rates of sedentary lifestyle and obesity. In times when the use of digital and technological devices is so intense, cycling allows you to be outdoors and in touch with yourself, also contributing to the improvement of mental health, lowering levels of anxiety and depression, for example", complete the teacher.

In environmental terms, the expert clarifies that using the bike to move around can contribute to reducing the number of cars on the streets, reducing the emission of polluting gases. In addition, allows people to be outdoors and in contact with nature, which has a restorative role in the stress experienced daily. “There is also the fact that the use of bicycle can save users money, that they won't need to spend on the bus ticket, transport by app or gasoline in the car.”

Teacher Ingrid says it's important to have fun, always paying attention to traffic safety. That's why, listed some tips on the subject:

  1. Although there is no legal obligation, the use of a helmet is recommended, to avoid injuries in case of falls;
  2. The use of light clothing or reflective vests, as well as lights on the front and rear of the bike, it makes the cyclist visible to other traffic participants.;
  3. The use of bike lanes or lanes is recommended, whenever possible, then, as it is an exclusive space for cyclists, reduces the possibility of accidents and collisions with other traffic participants;
  4. If you share the road with cars, It is important to ride in the right lane and in the same direction as the road., so that it forms part of the traffic flow and is seen by drivers. In this case, you will be able to signal your intentions with your arm and establish eye contact with drivers;
  5. Caring for the maintenance and adjustment of the bicycle is also fundamental.. It is advisable to go to a workshop to have it checked, calibrate the tires, check the brakes and lubricate the crowns, ratchets and chains;
  6. The use of headphones and cell phones while cycling is not recommended., as it can reduce the cyclist's attention to the stimuli present in traffic;
  7. Respect for signs must be frequent by all traffic participants.

In addition, the UDF teacher listed some places for those who want to cycle. “If you don't have a bike or if you're on a trip, It is possible to find a shared bike rental system in the following Brazilian cities: Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Goiania, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, São Paulo and Vitória.”

The psychologist ends by explaining that the bicycle also represents social benefits, since it allows people to have more contact with the community. through this, people can perceive and explore their neighborhood and the city in general, getting to know spaces in a different way than when traveling by car or bus, stuck in a traffic jam. “For those who go cycling during the holidays, always remember to circle carefully, respect and kindness.”
